Michael Weir's grandparents, who he visited in summers, lived in Georgetown and had a history with Southwestern. Michael's grandfather, AC "Doc" Weir graduated from Southwestern in 1927. His grandmother, Esther Messick Weir, came to Southwestern in 1938 to teach women's physical education, so his application to SU seemed a natural choice. He'll tell you that some of his fondest memories were of simply walking across campus because of the beauty of the grounds and the anticipation of wherever he was headed—conversation in dorm rooms or in the sub; parties; events at the FAB; meals at the Commons. Michael says, "Cheesy, yes, but the SU community is what made my memories."

When Dori's family moved to Georgetown at the end of her sophomore year of high school, her parents encouraged her to attend Southwestern. Like Michael, she says, "Many of my closest friends today were people I met while at SU. The sense of community was very strong… it truly was a wonderful time and full of wonderful memories." Both agree that "Giving is an important part of life, regardless of the recipient. Everyone should consider giving away a portion of their income and wealth. The amount or percentage doesn't matter. Give to causes you find worthwhile." For this alumni couple, sustaining the community dynamic at SU is clearly a worthy cause—the Weirs think of their legacy gift as a final "thank you."
