Although it was the last college she visited, Karen Hanson Flowers ’75 recognized that Southwestern would be a thriving home base for her from the time she set foot on campus. She already knew several people at the university, and immediately became active in numerous campus organizations. Karen credits Southwestern for helping her learn how to find opportunities to stay engaged, productive, and to forge an interest in lifelong learning. One of her favorite campus memories is the time that she and friends spent “sub sitting”—just hanging out between classes enjoying sweet rolls and Spanish omelets in the student union building where the McCombs Campus Center is now located.
Karen says, “SU gave so much to me that I want to give back to SU so that others can benefit from the educational experience.” Her dad had always told her that if she could ever afford to give something back to her alma mater, she should. When her daughter, Rebecca B. Flowers ’13 was attending Southwestern, tuition rates were increasing. Karen decided to endow a scholarship as she believes that “for those who want to attend a first rate liberal arts college, it is important that it be affordable.” She found that including a provision in her will to continue her support for Southwestern was simple and Southwestern’s Development staff were very helpful in making that goal accessible for her. Karen hopes that her gift enables students to graduate without “mountains of debt”, since she wants them to be able to give back also.
