Connie Hinshaw Brown ’67 knew where she would go to college long before she even graduated from high school. As her grandparents, Margaret McKennon Quinn and Patrick S. Quinn had before WWI, and her mother Patricia Quinn Hinshaw had before WWII, Connie decided to attend Southwestern University. Coming from a large Houston high school with more students in her graduating class than the entire enrollment of Southwestern at that time, and being an only child, Connie loved the closeness of dormitory living and the lifelong friendships formed that continue to this day. Following the legacy of her mother and grandmother, she was initiated into Delta Delta Delta, serving as treasurer of the chapter her senior year.

During her sophomore year, Connie was awarded the Louis Calder Foundation Scholarship in Memory of Herman Brown which offered her the opportunity to live with a family and to study at the University of the Americas in Mexico City. Having finished her coursework in December, she taught Spanish at her alma mater Bellaire High School, before attending graduate school at Middlebury College’s Spanish School in Madrid from where she received a Master’s in Spanish. After teaching Spanish, she graduated from the Institute for Paralegal Training in Philadelphia with a Certificate in Litigation. Her career as an antitrust litigation legal assistant at Vinson & Elkins LLP lasted thirty-seven years until she retired in 2011. During her tenure there she used her Spanish fluency on several international arbitrations.

In honor of her love and appreciation for the liberal arts education which she received at Southwestern, Connie with her husband Lawrence Brown created an endowed scholarship and she included the University in her will.

When asked what motivated her outright and estate gifts, Connie said that she wanted to give students the same kind of opportunity she had to live and study in Mexico City on a Southwestern scholarship. She hopes that the international study experience will broaden students’ university experiences and better prepare them for their professional careers. Connie describes that it was very easy to include her alma mater in her will and she loves having her name on the scholarship.
